May Meeting Recap

WE HAD A SEW DAY!

If you missed our sew day, don’t worry. We had so much fun, we’re already planning another. We met Saturday morning at 10 am, and our beloved President, Candy Scott, brought us boxes and boxes of free remnant fabric for charity quilts straight from the Robert Kaufman Co. warehouse. If you would like to take free fabric to make charity quilts, make sure you send us a picture of your finished quilt.

Treasurer, Gayle Bennett, inspired us with some amazing scrappy quilt ideas, and we all dove right in, sorting fabrics and cutting strips for scrap quilts. Don’t worry, there’s still some fabric left. It will be available at our June meeting.

April Meeting

Programs Vice President, Laura Green showed us loads of Wedge Quilt inspiration to motivate us for our July Modern Wedge Challenge Reveal. She also showed us how to construct a set-in circle. If you missed it or if you need a review, click here or go to YouTube and search for Christina Cameli Set-in Circle.

To learn more about our the Modern Wedge Quilt Challenge click here.

Ector Simpson, from Mizell Senior Center in Palm Springs, spoke to us about participating in the Aids Quilt project. This is the project’s 37th anniversary, and to continue to call attention to HIV/AIDs, Ector is working with the founders to bring quilt panels to Palm Springs. He is also encouraging local quilters to make panels.

Panels can be made to remember someone who has been lost to Aids or to celebrate a survivor. Panels must be completed by October 15, 2023.

Stay tuned for more information.

We’re having a Yard Sale! Guild Members, Christine Sharpe and Kate McCarthy are organizing the event which will be held on June 17th from 8 am to noon.

Please donate items by bringing them to our June meeting. Please only bring items in good condition. Unsold items will be donated.

This is a fundraiser for our guild. Fundraisers help us pay for workshops and speakers and also help to keep our dues low.

You name it, she has given it a try, and regardless of the method, her quilts are stunning. Her use of color and contrast are outstanding. Thank you, Debi, for sharing your quilts with us.

2023 Block of the Month

Guild member Tricia Williams kicked off our program with Half Square Triangles (HST’s). This year each block will be made with 16 same-sized HST’s. This modern take on a sampler quilt was designed by Omaha Modern Quilt Guild Member, Stephanie Jacobson and is used with her permission. Members will need a total of 192 same-sized HST’s. The size of the finished quilt will depend on the size of the HST’s each member chooses to make, and whether or not sashing is used. There are plenty of ways to make HST’s and we will share some of them on the Block of the Month page here. Check out the page for all the details, some inspiration, and some helpful tutorials.

Modern Wedge Challenge

Put on your thinking caps and your Machingers and join our 2023 quilt challenge, “Wedges”. Grab your 9°, 10°, 15°, 45° or whatever size wedge you have and create! We will show off our quilts at the July 2023 meeting. For the rules and other helpful information, check out our our 2023 Challenge page.

Get to know our Volunteers

Volunteers are the fuel that powers our guild. We would not exist without the efforts of these wonderful members. This month we are featuring four of our committee chairpersons who have volunteered repeatedly throughout the years. Next month we will feature a few more. We still have open volunteer opportunities . Volunteering is a great way to get to know our talented members and with Zoom, it is easier than ever to volunteer from the comfort of your own home. Please consider being a volunteer. We would love to have you.

Kimberly Wingert, Membership Chairperson

My background is in art history and I love the history of American quilts and quilt culture. I began quilting because of my love of modern quilts and Amish quilts which are connected by their simple beauty. I was born in Southern California, but grew up mostly in Minnesota. I returned to Southern California to finish high school. My husband, Andy and I were happily married for 38 years. We have four adult children, two boys and two girls. Sadly we lost Andy suddenly in 2020. I am so thankful for the time we had him in our lives. Although it pushes me a little out of my comfort zone, I am happy to support our guild by volunteering as Membership Chairperson.

Becky Brekke, Fundraising Chairperson

I am happy to volunteer to be the Fundraising Chairperson this year! I have served in a variety of positions since I joined the guild in 2017: Social Media, Secretary, Co VP-Programs, and VP Communications. I have enjoyed the time I have spent on the Board immensely, but this year decided to step back and take a much-needed break. This move also gives others the opportunity to get involved – the experience is truly priceless.

If you didn’t know, I am an Illinois native and a California transplant for the past 12 years. My husband Tim and I thought we’d only be living in California for 3-4 years – lol! We share our home with our two fur babies, Emily, 16 and Archie, 7 months! And this year my dad became a snowbird and is staying with us until the weather is bearable in Illinois. So, as you can imagine, there’s never a dull moment. I am a contract administrator/office manager for a small family business specializing in the water/wastewater business. I have been in this industry since 1996 and is how I met my husband in 2001!

If you’d like to get your feet wet and join a committee – come join me in fundraising; it is very rewarding to help insure the guild’s financial success for the upcoming year. A few years ago, I led the guild’s fundraising event called UpCycle Sale Event. It was very successful, and I feel we need something like this again. It motivates me to DESTASH! Contact me or any board member with any questions!

Barbara Mathews, Facilities and Retreat Chairperson

Hi, I’m Barbara Mathews, widowed with three grown daughters, 5 (pretty much gown) grandchildren and a great grandson on the way. I’ve been sewing as long as I can remember – from making Barbie doll clothes, to my own clothes, then my children and grandchildren’s clothes!  Now, I get to make some goodies for my soon-to-arrive great-grandson!

I’ve been quilting for about 15 years, and enjoy a wide variety of projects.  I’m leaning more toward smaller projects – lap-size quilts, table runners, art quilts – and I’m really enjoying felted wool applique and collage.

I belong to two guilds, and have made many good friends over the years, hosting a couple of friendship sewing groups at my home in Lake Mathews.  Currently, I’m Committee Chair for retreats and facilities, securing and making arrangements for retreats and places to hold our regular meetings and other gatherings.  I would welcome any suggestions in these two areas.

Evie Rienstra, Block of the Month Chairperson

My interest in quilting began at age 3 when I was given a crazy quilt made with conversation prints and embroidery on every seam including the seams hidden under the whisker shield. That quilt ultimately ignited my desire to learn how to make my own quilts; however, I had no idea how or where to learn.

Eventually I attended an Eleanor Burns lecture and a spark was lit. Within a short time, I completed my first quilt — a log cabin, of course. Two years later I joined my first quilt guild and found a community that shares my passion. I’ve joined a few more guilds since then. Like potato chips, sometimes one isn’t enough.

My goal with the IEMQG Block of the Month is to provide patterns that spark the imagination and stimulate creativity. I look forward to seeing what is produced with this year’s BOMs.

December Meeting – Holiday Party!

It’s A Party!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!  I hope that you have exactly the kind of holiday plans that you love, whether it’s with family, or friends, or maybe you’re having a quiet time of your own.

Our December guild meeting is coming up a week after the Thanksgiving weekend on Saturday December 7, 2019.  We have cozy plans back at the Casa Blanca branch of the Riverside Library, located at 2985 Madison St, Riverside.  If you didn’t join us last month it is easy to find.  After you take the Madison St Exit from the 91 Fwy drive south a half of a mile and turn Left at the stop sign at Emerald St and take the quick Right into the driveway entrance to the parking lot.

The menu this year is ‘Sweet and Savory’ and if you haven’t signed up for something to bring you can contact Simone Bradford at simonesews@gmail.com and let her know if you’d like to add to the list.  For those who are on the sign up sheet already we are excited to share what I’m sure will be yummy snacks.  Our food never disappoints!

The meeting is an easy one with quick announcements, a Big Box Of Questions Game, and a notions exchange.  To participate in the exchange please bring a new wrapped sewing notion, price limit $10.

A Sew and Share will wrap up the meeting.  I hope you can make it and look forward to seeing everyone!

Upcoming September Meeting Program Information!

Our next meeting is just around the corner on September 7th at 2pm at the Riverside Main Library. Our program entitled, “What Was I Thinking? The ugly fabric challenge” is going to be a fun and interactive meeting for us all!

Here’s how the program will work:

Bring a fabric from your stash that you can’t quite fathom what you must have been thinking when you bought it. Or maybe don’t recall what the purpose was – a project of some sort – and now you’re stumped!

Enter your name on the sign up list when you arrive.

Each participant will be given two minutes to show and attempt to explain how you acquired your fabric.

We’ll take a couple minutes for suggestions or ideas from the audience.

If someone loves your ugly fabric feel free to pass it along.

Maybe you can leave with an idea of how to use it.

Maybe it is destined to be the backing for a pet mat?

Using a random number generator for each participant on the list, one lucky presenter will win the terrific prize that Laura posted online. (It’s a good one so you won’t want to miss your chance!)

Come prepared to offer creative and constructive advice.  Or just come for an entertaining event. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone!

Until then, happy sewing!

A Message from Gayle – IEMQG August Meeting News!

Join us next Saturday as Natalie Barnes will bring her AURIfilosophy to the IEMQG.  Learn all things Aurifil thread!  Included with the program will be a pop up Aurifil shop.  For those of you new to Aurifil you can purchase threads to try.  To those of us devoted to Aurifil as our favorite thread (that would be me), well, I should probably make a shopping list.  Just recently I was thinking of a color that I needed.

Our exhibit at the Chaffey Community Museum of Art came to an end on July 22nd.  Thank you to everyone who submitted a quilt, or chair, and made the exhibit a success.  If you did not pick up your quilt in person I have them and they’ll be available to retrieve at the guild meeting. The exhibit was very well received and I’m pretty sure we changed the image in a few people’s minds about quilting.

I did take the opportunity to solicit quilts that were shown at Chaffey for our big exhibit as the featured guild to hang in the atrium at Road to California.  Those quilts have been photographed and measured for submission to Road and I’ll email the quilters individually about that.  Please keep in mind that quilts for Road to California must be a minimum of 72 inches long and can be a width up to 100 inches.  We will need to submit photos and measurements of each quilt to Road in October. This photo can be just the completed quilt top since delivery of the quilts to Road isn’t until January.  My husband Mike will be available at our October guild meeting for anyone who needs a good shot of their quilt and has also offered to convert any photo format that you have available to a PDF as Road has requested.  You can email those photos to me when the time comes.  This exhibit is open to guild members only and we need 44 quilts. I’m sure we can deliver!

The August meeting is at the Riverside City Main Library, 3581 Mission Inn Ave, Riverside.  Our guild meetings are scheduled at that location for August, September and October.  Depending on how you travel to meetings, please be aware that the 60 Freeway will be closed between the 15 Fwy and the 91 Fwy from 10 pm Friday nights to 5 am Monday mornings.  This is scheduled for every weekend, except Labor Day, from now until mid-November.  I’ll need to plan accordingly!

Come socialize at 1:30 Saturday and enjoy the guild meeting at 2:00, see you there!

Fundraising/Exhibits, Laura
Laura announced she had made up more quilt kits for either a charity quilts or craft fair item. She also had fabric for a flash sale.  She also brought in post card flyers for the Chaffey Museum Exhibit on May 23rd and encouraged everyone to take a stack and share.  If you didn’t bring in your quilt to show at the exhibit, you can still drop them off at the museum on May 18th and 19th.

Membership, Ruthann
If anyone has any issues registering with the MQG, please contact Ruthann.

Block Lotto, Simone
Simone showed members examples of low volume blocks called The I.E. (The Improv Effect) for the Block Lotto for May/June and to be collected at the July meeting.  The block tutorial will be located on both the IEMQG website and Simone’s blog.

After a short break, Kim superbly presented “Community and Creativity, a History of Women and Quilting”.  Kim gave a short biography of herself: daughter for an antique dealer; lover of all things old; Art History major; ‘American Patchwork’ was the title of her thesis.  Kim took us on a quilting journey through the centuries starting in the 17th century to current time. It was amazing to hear how quilting has transformed the lives of women throughout the ages. Kim taught us to see how quilting became more than just making quilts for bed covers; it was a way to express social concerns, record personal accounts and make political statements. A huge thanks to Kim for an outstanding presentation.

Show and Shares immediately followed Kim’s presentation; 7 members shared their wonderful creations.

Raffles
Winners of the Block Lotto, fat quarter, and name tag raffles were presented with their prizes.

Attendance: There were 24 members in attendance and 5 guests.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:15 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Becky Brekke
