Guest Speaker, Stephanie Hackney of Hobbs Batting

Our March speaker, Stephanie Hackney of Hobbs Batting, gave us all the resources we need to pick batting for any project. She recommended that we answer five basic questions when choosing batting for a project. What are you making? What do you want the finished surface to look like? Who is it for? How will it be used? And Where will it be used? If you need a highly durable batting, then she recommends that you consider using polyester. It is strong, shrink resistant, and non allergenic. Because it doesn’t shrink it provides a smooth finish. Cotton is a great choice for warm climates, and because it tends to shrink a bit, it will provide a crinkled texture to a finished quilt . It can be purchased with a built in stabilizer referred to as scrim which helps retain its shape. Wool while best known for the warmth it provides, is the perfect batting for show quilts since it doesn’t retain creases, but it can shrink and felt and should only be laundered in cold water. Silk batting, while a little more delicate, is know for its wonderful drape and is the perfect batting for clothing. For more information about batting visit http://www.hobbsbatting.com
