Meeting Recap: February 3rd

  • The Guild’s February meeting was physically at the new location at the Arlanza Library is at 8267 Philbin Ave, Riverside, CA 92503, click to see Google map.
  • The Guild welcomed a guest to the meeting who saw the Guild’s Instagram posts and decided to come visit. It was great to have you at our meeting Christine!
  • Many members brought their lunch and participated in the Saturday February 3rd Sew-In. Some participants worked on their personal projects while others worked on 2024 Philanthropy projects. The Sew-In began at 10:00 am and ended for lunch 12:30 pm. Clean-up and the social time is 1:30 pm to 2:00 pm.
  • During the Sew-In Kaufman fabric was distributed for 2024 Philanthropy projects. Fabric is still available. There will be future opportunities to participate.
  • Our President Candy Scott and our Charity Chair Gayle Bennett graciously created quilt and pillow case kits that were disbursed at Sew-In to interested members.
  • Sharon Burgh sold raffle tickets for the Quilter’s Raffle Basket and drew the winning ticket for a fortunate member.
  • Out Guide member, Samantha Saturday, spoke about a quilt artist she follows on Instagram: Jennifer Candon with her website is at: https://www.jennifercandon.com/ . Jennifer creates bold works and calls herself a “Textile Muralist”. Samantha showed some images of Jennifer’s studio, creative process and finished works.
  • QuiltCon happens February 22-25th. For those members who cannot attend the Modern Quilt Guild has provided an opportunity to participate from the comfort of our device (phone, table, laptop etc.) where ever we are. You must sign-in on the Modern Quilt Guild website. If you have never signed into the website you must do so first prior to the 15th to make sure your membership works. Don’t wait to the last minute. You might be singing the blues instead of enjoying the online lectures.
    • QuiltCon 2024 Lecture Streaming Pass
    • Stream all the QuiltCon 2024 lectures from home Thursday, February 22 – March 4th at 11:59 pm EST with the purchase of a Streaming Lecture Pass for for $265.00/member! Purchases must be made by Thursday, February 15th, 2024, at 11:59 pm EST. No additional purchases can be made after that time.
  • 2023 Block of the Month reveal had members proudly displaying their modern interpretation of the 2023 BOMs. See photos below.
  • Several members provided some of their personal finishes for Show and Share. See photos below.
  • February’s Drop-In Sew will occur on Monday, February 12th and 26th. It is sew fun. Zoom in and let’s sew. Check your email for Zoom links that are sent out the Sunday prior to the Drop-In Sew.
  • February Tip of the Month: Download the Robert Kaufman Quilting Calculator App from the Apple or Google stores

Next Guild Meeting: March 3rd Overview:

  • The Guild meeting is March 2nd, 2024 at a new location, the Arlanza Library is at 8267 Philbin Ave, Riverside, CA 92503, click to see Google map.
  • The Zoom speaker for the March program will be Audrey Essary of Cotton & Bourbon. Audrey is recognized at Quilt National, International Quilt Festival, and QuiltCon. Check out her amazing quilt gallery! There is a $10 guest fee if non-members would like to attend the program. The guest fee is payable through PayPal and checks or cash are accepted the day of the Guild meeting.
  • See Audrey on PBS Fresh Quilting co-produced by The Modern Quilt Guild (MQG) and KS Productions has three (3) videos of Audrey Using Negative Space, Paper Piecing, and Sewing Curves.

2024 Membership Dues are due by Guild Meeting, March 3, 2024. You may pay by check at a meeting or you may pay via PayPal. Dues will remain at $45 this year, thanks to the generosity and hard work of our outstanding members. You must fill out and return the membership form found in members corner. Feb 2024 Block of the Month

#2 – Galaxy Star

The February Block of the Month, Galaxy Star, is available for download. Joanna Figueroa of Fig Tree & Co. selected this star because of the “secondary pattern it creates when used on its own.” Joanna will show you a few fun ways to use this block over on Joanna’s blog post about the Galaxy Star.

2024 IEMQG Quilt Retreat will be held November 4–7th at Vina de Lestonnac in Temecula. The Guild has reserved nine rooms for the 18 members that have paid their deposits. There are two members on a waiting list. Other members who wish to be added to the waiting list, please contact Lynn Hanna . Lynn will confirm if space is available in September.

2024 Fund Raising

  • Fund raising is necessary for the Guild to carry out is mission, to provide resources to its members and to keep member dues as low as possible.
  • To date fund raising activities include:
    • Several quilts that were submitted to IE Craft Collective, a non-profit, to try and sell them for the Guild. The Guild receives 70% of sale value while the Craft Collective receives the remaining 30% as commission.
    • The drawing for the Quilter’s Raffle Basket was held at the February 3rd meeting. Pam Knutson won the lovely basket of quilting supplies and notions.
