May Meeting Recap

WE HAD A SEW DAY!

If you missed our sew day, don’t worry. We had so much fun, we’re already planning another. We met Saturday morning at 10 am, and our beloved President, Candy Scott, brought us boxes and boxes of free remnant fabric for charity quilts straight from the Robert Kaufman Co. warehouse. If you would like to take free fabric to make charity quilts, make sure you send us a picture of your finished quilt.

Treasurer, Gayle Bennett, inspired us with some amazing scrappy quilt ideas, and we all dove right in, sorting fabrics and cutting strips for scrap quilts. Don’t worry, there’s still some fabric left. It will be available at our June meeting.

April Meeting

Programs Vice President, Laura Green showed us loads of Wedge Quilt inspiration to motivate us for our July Modern Wedge Challenge Reveal. She also showed us how to construct a set-in circle. If you missed it or if you need a review, click here or go to YouTube and search for Christina Cameli Set-in Circle.

To learn more about our the Modern Wedge Quilt Challenge click here.

Ector Simpson, from Mizell Senior Center in Palm Springs, spoke to us about participating in the Aids Quilt project. This is the project’s 37th anniversary, and to continue to call attention to HIV/AIDs, Ector is working with the founders to bring quilt panels to Palm Springs. He is also encouraging local quilters to make panels.

Panels can be made to remember someone who has been lost to Aids or to celebrate a survivor. Panels must be completed by October 15, 2023.

Stay tuned for more information.

We’re having a Yard Sale! Guild Members, Christine Sharpe and Kate McCarthy are organizing the event which will be held on June 17th from 8 am to noon.

Please donate items by bringing them to our June meeting. Please only bring items in good condition. Unsold items will be donated.

This is a fundraiser for our guild. Fundraisers help us pay for workshops and speakers and also help to keep our dues low.

Block of the Month

Here is our May Block of the Month. You may make it in any size and with any color palette. For more details, ideas, and tutorials visit our 2023 BOM page right here.

2023 Block of the Month

Guild member Tricia Williams kicked off our program with Half Square Triangles (HST’s). This year each block will be made with 16 same-sized HST’s. This modern take on a sampler quilt was designed by Omaha Modern Quilt Guild Member, Stephanie Jacobson and is used with her permission. Members will need a total of 192 same-sized HST’s. The size of the finished quilt will depend on the size of the HST’s each member chooses to make, and whether or not sashing is used. There are plenty of ways to make HST’s and we will share some of them on the Block of the Month page here. Check out the page for all the details, some inspiration, and some helpful tutorials.

President’s Message

Greetings Modern Quilters!

Welcome new members! I’m so excited to see all the new faces at our meetings and even at Zoom Drop-in Sew. We do our best to welcome everyone whether you are new to quilting, an experienced quilter, or somewhere in between. We are so glad that you have found us.

This month we are celebrating our 7th Birthday. Our June meeting will be a hybrid meeting (in person at Arlington Library and on Zoom) with guest speaker, Sheila Frampton Cooper speaking to us via zoom. Sheila will also teach a 2-half-day class via Zoom on July 3rd and 10th, and we will join from our own sewing rooms. Remember to sign up early, as the class is limited to the first 20 quilters. The price is $45 for guild members and $55 for non-members.

It is hard to believe that we are already in May, 2022. Wasn’t QuiltCon just a few weeks ago? What a great turn-out of IEMQG members we had, and I’m already looking forward to next February 22-26, 2023 when we meet in Atlanta.

Speaking of QuiltCon 2023, be on the lookout for email from the MQG with a schedule of classes, lectures and sign-up dates. There will be a separate email regarding hotel reservations. The MQG block of rooms sells out quickly, so now is the time to start planning.

May Meeting Recap

Our May meeting was in person at the Lake Mathews Community Center where we were able to share ideas for up-cycling our left over quilt blocks (orphan blocks) and even swap a few blocks. Our talented members shared bags, pouches, rug mugs, pin cushions, pillow tops and even quilts made with left over blocks. Members also brought their left over blocks to the meeting for adoption by others who left the meeting inspired to give the adopted orphan blocks new life. It will be fun to see what members do with their adopted blocks. Maybe we’ll see some get turned in to Sew Powerful Purses! Go to www.sewpowerful.org to learn more about how these purses keep African girls in school! Give your finished purse to Laura Green before our August meeting.
