
Meeting Recap: May 4th

- The Guild’s May meeting was held at its new and we hope permanent location: at La Sierra Public Library located at 4600 La Sierra Avenue, Riverside, CA 92505, click to see Google map.
- Social time: 1:30 pm – 2:00 pm; Meeting 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
- The Guild members enjoyed meeting a new visitor, Deborah. Deborah is a fiber artist with a strong sewing and quilting history. Welcome Deborah! We hope you return soon!
- A survey to change meeting time will be coming out from Kate, Membership Chair. Please reply to Kate by entering your response into the email and return. Please email the Guild if you have questions.
- Raffle tickets were not sold for the March/April/May Quilter’s Raffle Basket; therefore, ticket sales will resume in June with the drawing for the basket winner to occur at the end of the June meeting. Good luck ladies!
- Several members provided some of their personal finishes. Unfortunately I do not have any photos to share. If you have photos of your quilt finish that you would like to share with the blog please email them to the Guild.
- The meeting was adjourned early for members to begin sewing their improve Wonky Log Cabin Blocks. If you have photos of your Wonky Blocks that you would like to share with the Blog please email them to the Guild.
- MQG Sew-Along: MQG has announced an 8-week sew-along beginning on April 18th. Registration is on the Member Resource Library.
- Reminder the May Drop-In Sew will happen on May 13th and the 27th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. It is sew fun. Zoom in and let’s sew. Check your email for Zoom links that are sent out the Sunday prior to the Drop-In Sew event.
- May Tip of the Month – Use tools wisely: When rotary cutting, start with the blade about 1/2 inch up on the ruler, then cut it back to the tip and then cut forward. If cuts are always made at the tip, the blade over time will chip away at the tip of ruler resulting in a ruler that is no longer square.
Next Guild Meeting: June 1st Overview:

- The June meeting will include a Sew Day, beginning at 11:00am. Bring your LUNCH, sewing equipment, and your Wonky Log Cabin Blocks.
- We will celebrate the Guild’s birthday. Supply list will be provided on the meeting reminder email blast.
- Reminder June Drop-In Sew will happen on the June 10th and the 24th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. It is sew fun. Zoom in and let’s sew. Check your email for Zoom links that are sent out the Sunday prior to the Monday Drop-In Sew.
- We will have a Project Reveal. Bring your quilty results to the Guild’s Recycle / Reuse/ Re-Purpose sewing challenge and see how our members’ interpreted the challenge shown below in Quilt Fun.
- Our second retreat payment of $115.00 dollars is due at the June Guild meeting. Payment can be made by cash, check, or PayPal to the Inland Empire Modern Quilt Guild . If this presents a challenge, please reach out to the Retreat Committee.

1st Quilt Challenge:
Recycle / Reuse/ Re-Purpose
- Description of Challenge:
- Incorporating recycled fabrics into quilting projects can contribute to the preservation of the environment while creating beautiful and meaningful pieces of art.
- When it comes to recycled fabrics the possibilities are endless:
- repurpose clothing / jeans / T-shirts / baby clothes
- linens / vintage bed sheets / blankets / table clothes / curtains
- worn-out quilts
- Challenge Rules:
- There are none.
- The world is your oyster.
- Go with your heart.
- Live it up.
- Reveal at June Meeting – We’d love to hear the story of your selected fabrics.
2nd Quilt Challenge:
Ugly Fabric Challenge
- Out members gathered up your ugliest fabric, purged their sewing room of unwanted fabrics, and brought them to the April meeting.
- Each quilter shared their ugly fabrics, and talked about them for two (2) minutes.
- The ugly fabrics are hung on a “Challenge Board.”
- Members picked fabrics from the “Challenge Board.”
- Members will use their selected fabrics in a project to present by the June Guild meeting.
- Can you identify your old “ugly” fabric while we celebrate how our creative members were able to utilize it in their art.
3rd Quilt Challenge
Wonky Log Cabin Blocks
- Sew-day at our June meeting starting at 11:00 am.
- Wonky Log Cabin blocks started in May and will continue into June.
- In June, the Wonky Log Cabin blocks will be sewed into a Charity Quilt(s).
- Updated to 13×13 inches so that Christine can square them up and put the quilt(s) together.
- This is a speed challenge using random scraps. NO RULES!
- Setup machine and work area to for a Sew Day starting at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. We will be flexiable for clean-up and when we will conduct the Guild meeting.
- We will try to have the Guild meeting at its normal time; 2:00 pm through 4:00 pm.
- Zoom members can work remotely from their home using their stash.
- Your Supply List:
- Your machine with a spool of a neutral thread and a wound bobbin.
- Don’t forget your power cord and foot pedal.
- Bring a power strip or extension cord if you have one.
- Rotary cutter and small cutting mat.
- Small pressing mat with travel iron (if you have one).
- Scissors, pins, seam ripper, and other sewing notions you may require.
- Your bag of pressed (in advance) scraps from your stash in various strip widths and sizes/lengths for use in a log cabin block.
- Your finished Wonky blocks.
- Your machine with a spool of a neutral thread and a wound bobbin.
- The Guild will provide:
- Some scraps from its stash that can be used with your scraps.
- A large ironing board and iron.
- A large cutting mat.
- Guidance, assistance with curating colors and the distribution of scraps to members.
- Maybe there is a prize for the member making the most blocks.
Members can take their blocks home to finish and bring them back to the June meeting for inclusion into Charity Quilt(s).
May Block of the Month
#5 – Southern Star
The May Block of the Month, Southern Star, is available for download. Jenelle Kent of Pieces of Treasure selected this star because it is named after the Southern Cross, which is a constellation seen in the Southern Hemisphere, and featured on the Australian flag. Jenelle is in Australia.

- A book of all 2024 exhibited quilts is available for $65.00 including shipping, on the MQG website. Stay tuned for additional information when it becomes available.
- Our Guild’s 2024 QuiltCon Community Outreach Quilt was a success. The quilt sold quickly for $400 to benefit charities in the Raleigh, NC area. Congratulations for all members who helped with this endeavor.
- Time to start thinking about the Outreach Quilt for next year, 2025.

2024 IEMQG Quilt Retreat
Retreat will be held November 4–7th at Vina de Lestonnac in Temecula. The Guild has reserved nine rooms for the 18 members that have paid their deposits. One member is on the waiting list. Other members who wish to be added to the waiting list, please contact the Retreat Committee. Confirmation of space for those on the waiting list is available in September.
The installment payment schedule is as follows: June, August, and October.

Charity Quilts
To date approximately ~20 quilts and ~20 pillowcases are planned for delivery to the House of Ruth this April. Photos are missing from our May meeting. If you would like to share, please email the Guild.
Show and Share
Show and Share at the May Guild meeting are missing. If you have a photo you would like to share email the Guild. Don’t forget to bring your personal quilt finishes to the June meeting. Your fellow Guild members would love to see them.
2024 Fund Raising
- Fund raising is necessary for the Guild to carry out is mission, to provide resources to its members and to keep member dues as low as possible.
- To date fund raising activities include:
- 2024 Membership drive == 31 members.
- Several quilts that were submitted to IE Craft Collective, a non-profit, to try and sell them for the Guild. The Guild receives 70% of sale value while the Craft Collective receives the remaining 30% as commission.
- A raffle for the new Quilter’s Basket kicked off at the March meeting. The Quilter’s Basket contains a lovely selections of quilting supplies, notions, and chocolate. Drawing will be held at June meeting.
