September Meeting Recap

Our September meeting was all about Maximalism in Quilting. What is maximalism? Well, while there really is no short and simple definition, it can be summed up as “more is more”- more of what you love. It includes a mix of colors, patterns, and textures used densely to create interesting and filled compositions. Below are some examples of maximalism in quilting.

To get us enthused about maximalism, Laura Green led us through construction of a Maximalist Mini Quilt and announced our fall challenge: Maximal Mini IEMQG Challenge 2023

Maximal Mini IEMQG Challenge 2023

This challenge will inspire you to gather your favorite fabrics and fill your quilt with your most loved prints and colors. Be bold, intricate, eclectic and ornate. Remember… More is more of what you love! Ruby Curvelets by Fiona Johnstone, is an excellent example of maximalism in modern quilting and it was Viewers’ Choice winner at QuiltCon 2023. Fiona filled her quilt with tiny curvelet motifs made using her favorite Ruby Star Society fabrics. Notice that she achieved structure by creating defined blocks. each block has its own color palette and theme.

ChallengeGuidelines:

  • little or no negative space
  • loud, vivid, bold colors
  • high contrast
  • many layers of interest
  • no side should be longer than 24″
  • due at December 2nd Holiday Party
