March 2017 General Meeting Minutes

IEMQG General Meeting
March 4, 2017
Grand Terrace Community Room, Grand Terrace, CA

The meeting was called to order at 2:05 by President Laura Greene. Laura announced that the
LAMQG March meeting will feature speaker Chawne Kimber. The Ventura MQG meets the 2nd Monday of the month; the Las Vegas MQG meets the last Wed of the month, and the Temecula Valley MQG meets the 3rd Thursday of the month. March 18th is National Quilting Day. Post your quilting on Instagram, #iemqg, and find us on Facebook at IE Modern Quilt Guild. Birthdays for March were announced. National MQG – Quiltcon 2017 – will be held in Savannah, GA this year.

There are a number of Fresh Quilting podcasts available with your Natl MQG membership. The MQG website is a challenge to navigate.
Michele Nichols was introduced by Gayle Bennett. Michele has been a driving force in creating and moving the IEMQG forward. After Quiltcon 2016 she, Laura Kong, and others met up and shared plans to collect like-minded people interested in Modern Quilting throughout the Inland Empire. This led to the group effort that was the Meet and Greet at the Garcia Center in June 2016. Nearly 60 people showed up, and the IEMQG was born. For today’s program, Michele presented a number of her quilts as well as her wearable creations.
There were 29 Members and 5 Guests at today’s meeting.

Jessica and Rachel held a drawing for charity quilt donors. With every donation you receive an entry to the drawing and when there are 10 entries a winner will be drawn.

Donna Gaston presented the new block for the Block Lotto. The link to instructions for this fun new block is posted on our website at http://www.iemodernquiltguild.com. Blocks are due at the April 1st meeting.

There will also be an Improv Block Swap at the next meeting, using four fabrics, either solids or prints that read as solids. Participants should bring 1 small, 1 medium, 1 large, and 1 extra large piece in a ziplock bag. Bags will be swapped. At home, participants will add one fabric of your own and create an “improve” block of any size to turn in at the May meeting.

Jessica Cook hosted a sale table of donated fabric. Proceeds will go towards our speaker fund for Latifah Saafir at our June meeting.

Entries from the President’s challenge “Animal” were displayed on the front table for all to admire and presented by each quilter. Laura Greene will display entries at the Upland City Library on Euclid Ave, for Women’s History Month. IEMQG member Kim Wingert will speak on March 29th at 6:30 pm on Women and Quilting. We encourage members to show support and attend her talk. Contact Laura Greene or Gayle Bennett if you need details and want to plan to meet.

Second Quarter Challenge theme is “Word” and will be due at the June 3rd meeting.

The meeting was finished with an inspiring display of member’s work in Sew and Tell.

The next meeting is Saturday April 1, 2017 and Lynn Hanna will present a show of photos of QuiltCon 2017 in Savannah, GA.

Meeting adjourned at 4:00 PM.
